Academic Advisors will learn empathy to relate to diverse students.
Academic Advisors will gain confidence and encouragement to work with diverse students.
Academic Advisors will learn multiple benefits of diversity in various settings.
Academic Advisors will learn what to do if a student or colleague uses a racial slur or other degrading terminology, gestures, or actions.
Academic Advisors will learn how to continually increase their multicultural competencies.

Beth Applegate was selected to faciliate a dalogue on race, power and privilege and how those things manifest themselves in team dynamics for a Program Team based in New York, DC, Belgium, Sierra Leone, and the UK. The Program Team provides technical support and guidance to field programs in 17 countries focused on the prevention of and response to violence against women and girls. Thier work takes place primarily in contexts affected by conflict, natural disaster and displacement and is part of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). IRC responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and in 22 U.S. cities, the IRC restores safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.

From June 5-25, Beth will co-facilitate an international dialogue among members of the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science. Specifically, co-facilitators will enlist NTL member insights, concerns, recommendations and challenges, with a focus on Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice: The Dream; The Research; The Practice. Our conversations should challenge the NTL community to delve into the Dream of DISJ, the relevant Research in DISJ, and our Practice of DISJ – both as a professional organization, and a community of scholar-practitioners.

The current mission of the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science is "to advance Applied Behavioral Science (ABS) in the service of social justice, oppression-free societies, and healthy individuals, groups and organizations in the world. We do this through:

Fostering learning in the theory and practice of personal and professional development, group development, group dynamics, organization change, community development, and social change.
Contributing to the scholarship of the ABS field through research, publishing, and knowledge building.
Partnering and learning with other organizations and groups worldwide."

Beth Applegate to Present Webinar on Service Learning and Leadership

As part of National AmeriCorps week, NTL Institute in collaboration with Americorps Alumni Association, is presenting a complimentary webinar focusing on Leadership & Communication. This event will take place on May18th from 12:00noon-1:00pm (EST), and is free and open to the general public.

In this interactive webinar participants will explore how to identify, articulate, and leverage their unique work/volunteer experiences into servant-leadership abilities that make a difference.
NTL Institute faculty, Beth Applegate and Ellen Greenberg, in collaboration with Americorps, will facilitate a lively peer-to-peer discussion about the essential qualities of good leadership and communication which participants will have the opportunity to expand and build upon.

Beth Applegate To Present At 12th Annual White Privilege Conference

Beth Applegate will present as session on Race, Power, & Privilege in the Sustainability Movement at the 12th Annual White Privilege Conference in Bloomington, MN April April 13-16, 2011. As the "green" movement grows we must take steps to understand the systemic forces of race, power, and privilege as they relate to sustainability. It is important to interrogate our own world views, understand other’s perspectives, uncover covert systemic issues, and enhance our skill in diagnosing and creating an inclusive movement. In this highly interactive session based on a case study we will invite participants to join a fish bowl and, using a specific set of reflection questions, discuss the elements of the case. The fish bowlwill be followed by a group discussion focused on equity and privilege. This workshop will help participants build skills to more confidently support their work through issues of reluctance, fear, and apprehension that may come up when dealing with issues of race, power and privilege. Beth Applegate to Present at Annaul Inclusive Conference on Identities

On March 3-4 2011 at the Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) Conference, Beth Applegate will present two sessions during the annual An Inclusive Conference of Identifies, presented by Attention, Reflection, Connection: Steps toward an Inclusive Campus. The goal of the conference is to build a culturally literate and inclusive community on the IUB campus: where all of its members can thrive and succeed, individually and collectively; where individuals have knowledge of, respect for, and the skills necessary to interact with people from other cultures in domestic and international contexts.

The first session Beth will facilitate is entitled, The Critical Liberation of White Women and will take place in the Neal Marshall Black Culture Center (Bridgewater Lounge) on Friday March 4, 10:00am-Noon:

Too often white women do not effectively partner and build coalitions in their work to dismantle racism and other forms of oppression. The dynamics of Internalized Dominance and Internalized Subordination result in unnecessary competition and conflict ~ wasting energy that could be directed to creating Liberation and social justice. In this highly interactive session participants will explore the current behaviors and attitudes of white women that create barriers to synergistic collaboration and identify the components of a critical liberation practice where they intentionally create partnerships that consistently model the core elements of social justice that they espouse in their work. Facilitators will provide a tool to identify the components of a critical liberation practice for white women for participants to expand and build upon.

The second session is entitled, Embracing Cultural Competnecy and will also take place on Friday March 4, from 3:00-4:30pm in the Neal Marshall Black Culture Center (Bridgewaters Lounge):

This highly interactive session starts with the assumption that participants have a range of personal and/or professional experiences, which involve working with issues of race, privilege, and power. Based on the book: Embracing Cultural Competency: A Roadmap for Nonprofit Capacity Builders, participants will have an opportunity to gain new insights into what it takes to be culturally competent and discuss provocative questions in a relaxed environment. The book presents the insights of authors who represent five major ethnic communities in the United States: Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, African American, White, and Latino.
